Signs of Termite Activity in KwaZulu-Natal Properties

Termites are a significant threat to properties across KwaZulu-Natal. Knowing what to look for can help you identify potential activity before serious damage occurs.

Back to blog

KwaZulu-Natal's warm, humid climate makes it one of South Africa's highest-risk provinces for termite activity. For property owners across Richards Bay, Empangeni and the wider King Cetshwayo District, understanding the warning signs of termite activity is essential to protecting your investment.

Understanding Termites in KwaZulu-Natal

Several termite species are active in KwaZulu-Natal, including subterranean and drywood varieties. Subterranean termites live in the soil and build mud tubes to access above-ground timber, while drywood termites establish colonies directly within the timber they consume.

Key Warning Signs

**Mud tubes.** Subterranean termites build pencil-thin mud tubes to travel between the soil and their food source. These are commonly found along foundations, walls and structural supports. Discovering mud tubes on your property is a strong indicator of active termite presence.

**Hollow-sounding timber.** When timber that should feel solid produces a hollow sound when tapped, this may indicate that termites have consumed the interior of the timber while leaving the surface relatively intact.

**Discarded wings.** Flying termites (alates) swarm during reproductive periods, typically after rain. Discovering discarded wings near windows, light sources or air vents indicates that a termite swarm has occurred nearby.

**Frass.** Drywood termites push their droppings (frass) out of the timber through small kick-out holes. Fine, granular powder near timber surfaces can indicate drywood termite activity.

**Damaged or blistering paint.** Termite activity below timber surfaces or within wall cavities can cause paint to bubble or blister as moisture from termite activity affects the surface.

**Sagging floors or ceilings.** Advanced termite damage to structural timber can cause floors to bounce or feel soft underfoot, or ceilings to sag. This level of damage indicates a significant and long-term infestation.

What to Do

If you notice any of these signs, avoid disturbing the area and contact a pest-management professional promptly. Disturbing termites can cause them to relocate, making subsequent treatment more difficult.

Cazzna1 Pest Control conducts entomology inspections for wood-destroying insects and can provide a thorough assessment of your property. For properties in KwaZulu-Natal, annual inspections are a sensible precaution.
