Rodent Prevention Tips for Warehouses

Warehouses and distribution centres are particularly vulnerable to rodent activity. Effective prevention protects your stock, your facilities and your compliance standing.

Warehouses and distribution centres create an attractive environment for rodents. The combination of food products, bulk storage, warmth, water sources and numerous entry points makes rodent management one of the most important pest-control challenges for the logistics and manufacturing sectors in Richards Bay and the wider King Cetshwayo District.

Why Warehouses Are High-Risk

Rodents are attracted to warehouses by food sources (including agricultural products, processed food and packaging materials), warmth and shelter opportunities within racking systems and stored goods. Loading bays, dock levellers and utility penetrations provide convenient entry points. Once inside, rodents can rapidly establish colonies if conditions are favourable.

Practical Prevention Measures

**Seal external entry points.** Inspect the perimeter of the building for gaps larger than 6mm. Pay particular attention to loading bay doors, roller door perimeters, pipe and cable penetrations and drainage openings. Seal or fit rodent-proof screens to all identified entry points.

**Manage loading bay discipline.** Loading bays are among the most common entry points for rodents in warehouse environments. Minimise the time dock doors are left open, use dock door seals and brushes, and inspect incoming deliveries for signs of rodent activity.

**Control vegetation around the perimeter.** Tall grass, dense vegetation and debris around the building exterior provide harbourage for rodents. Maintain a clear zone around the building perimeter.

**Implement strict waste management.** Ensure all waste, including cardboard, food debris and packaging waste, is removed from the warehouse regularly and stored in sealed, rodent-proof containers outside.

**Manage stock rotation.** Rodents exploit rarely moved stock for harbourage. Implement FIFO (first in, first out) stock rotation and regularly inspect and move racked goods to identify early signs of activity.

**Install a professional monitoring programme.** Bait stations placed at strategic points around the building perimeter and in high-risk internal areas provide an early warning system and a control mechanism. Monitoring data can also support compliance audits.
